· SYNOPSIS ·
The ANIMOSUS Project is an upcoming RPG series featuring anthro characters and a magical world ruled by animosity. Dragonkin and beastkin must adapt and find Hope so that they can escape the touch of the Void that tears at the soul from within. The story is split into two iterations: ANIMISM (prequel) and ANIMOSUS (main). The former takes place a few decades before ANIMOSUS and focuses on the dragonic heroes who ended the long-running Devil War, while the latter delves into the chaos sown by the Wraith War.
· THE SOUL ·
Within each star in the universe lies a dormant soul. Stars that erupt in a spectacular supernova are immediately reborn as "angels," while the souls of stars that collapse into black holes are corrupted into "wraiths."Even the Earth possesses what is known as the "mother soul," which breathes life across the land, seas and skies. The souls of every living thing on Earth originate from its own soul. Death is not permanent as these lesser souls are reclaimed by the earth to reincarnate once again; this interwoven dance of life and death is known as "the cycle of eternal return."Souls are made up of equal parts Hope and Void, but the downfall of Anima disrupted the natural balance of the world. Now, an excess of Hope meant the destruction of empathy, while an excess of the Void... leads to a monstrous transformation. It is necessary to preserve balance in order to put an end to the cycle of hatred.
· MAGIC ·
Magic is the ability of the soul to manipulate the various forces and properties of the universe.Mortals did not possess magic before, but Anima's death brought chaotic effects to the Earth's soul, thus ushering in a new age of "Aspects."Aspects are magic users who can manipulate an aspect of reality. They are granted a title that describes the theme of their abilities (e.g. Fire Aspect). There are four schools of magic that an Aspect may specialize in: Chaos, Nature, Primal, and Spirit. There is an elemental wheel relationship between these schools:
· Chaos weakens the Spirit
· Nature triumphs over Chaos
· Primal power bends Nature
· Spirit transcends the Primals
Chaos magic is the embodiment of destruction and all that is unholy.
Nature magic involves the manipulation of natural matter and processes on Earth.
Primal magic affects the properties of matter, fields, particles and/or space-time.
Spirit magic enhances or distorts the body, mind and soul of the user and their foes.
· TERMINOLOGY ·
- Aether: The domain of the Aetherian Kingdom, which occupies the eastern half of the Empyrean continent.
- Angel: A celestial entity that is born from the core of a dead star. Their souls are made of Hope, housed in a chitinous-like vessel. They possess great power, far above any Aspect.
- Animal: A race of anthropomorphic beasts, similar to the Draconians. They are named after Anima.
- Aspect: An entity that possesses magic. Typically they are randomly born with their power, but magic has been bestowed upon very few by higher beings.
- Astral Plane: Also known as the dream realm, it is a separate plane of existence dominated by Hope. It is where all souls and their dreams reside.
- Beast: Refers to animals of the real-world equivalent, and is often used as a pejorative against in-world Animals.
- Core: An orb containing remnants of an Aspect's magic and soul that is created upon every Aspect's death.
- Draconian: A race of anthropomorphic dragons. They can live upwards to 150 years, unlike the Animals who have human-like lifespans.
- Demon: An Animal whose physical genes were affected by Lucifer's magic; they generally bear horns and a demonic tail.
- Devil: Similar to Demons, but for a Draconian. Devils and Demons are considered a separate race from Draconians and Animals.
- Empyr: The continent where all of the main events of ANIMISM and ANIMOSUS take place.
- Eternal Return: The cyclical process of reincarnation, in which the souls of all earthly beings that die return to the mother soul and are eventually reborn.
- Hope: An essence that makes up half a soul and the entirety of the astral plane. An absence of Hope causes one's soul to teeter to the Void, making it vulnerable to despair.
- Ley Field: An invisible field that surrounds all souls and allows them to interact with the physical universe. The stronger the soul's ley field, the more potent their influence is.
- Ley Lines: A set of geometrical lines that make up a soul's ley field. Like DNA to life forms, ley lines are unique to all souls and dictate what kind of magic an Aspect will have.
- Ley Nodes: An intersection of ley lines. They do not have much purpose for a smaller soul, but they manifest as huge fonts of spiritual power in various places of Earth.
- Material Plane: Also known as the physical realm, it is the dimension where all objects and entities exist, and is dominated by the Void. It is adjacent to the astral plane.
- Nether: The territory of the Netherian Kingdom, which lies in the Western half of Empyr.
- Soul: An immaterial essence that is integral to all life as well as certain astronomical objects. There exists planetary souls, stellar souls, and a theoretical universal soul.
- Void: An essence that makes up half a soul and opposes Hope. An excessive amount of Void may corrupt an entity into a wraith.
- Wraith: Nightmarish beings that may spawn from the creation of a black hole or from an exceedingly unstable soul. They devour other souls to satiate their hunger for Hope.
HOPE & VOID
The angels of stars and stone clashed with fiends of blood and bone...When the God of all creation tore itself into two, the physical universe as we know it was ushered into being. The God of Balance became the God of Hope and the God of Void, the chaotic separation of which resulted in what we call the "Big Bang."The two Gods fought for eternity for absolute dominion over the astral realm. As they exchanged blows, Hope and Void trickled from their wounds instead of blood. When the two components intermingle, they form a soul.As it is a soul's natural instinct to occupy a vessel, they searched for any kind of matter that was available in the astral realm—that is, stardust and rocks, so that they can be given life. But the Gods sought to purify or corrupt these wayward souls as part of their galactic armies.Souls that made contact with the God of Hope were stripped of their Void, thereby removing any capacity for emotion. They became what we call "celestials," divine deities with a strict hierarchy and a strong inclination towards order. On the other hand, those who made contact with the God of Void were corrupted into eldritch horrors known as "wraiths." Without any Hope, the wraiths became agents of pure chaos, forced to feast on the essence of celestials and souls in order to pacify themselves. When a celestial dies, their "core" collapses into something akin to a black hole, transforming them into their enemy. As the eternal war went on, there was an inevitable surplus of souls. The celestials decided to send these souls out into the physical realm (which existed outside of the influence of the Gods) as resources in the astral realm dwindled. The "seraphim," who reigned above the celestial hierarchy due to their unique ability to create life, were selected to provide a new home and vessel for these souls. Two notable seraphim were born many eons ago; they were named Anima and Animus. It was said that they resembled six-winged serpent beasts, with stardust in place of flesh and chitin in place of scales. They were responsible for all life on our planet until Animus was corrupted into a wraith at some point in the past; that was when peace was shattered for Earth's remaining days, or so we believed.

RACES
There exists three dragon-like races and four beast-like races on our planet: Draconians, Devils and Myrmidons, as well as Animals, Demons, beasts and monsters, respectively. Sea variants exist for all races except Myrmidons.- DRACONIANS
The first instance of an intelligent race, these dragonic lifeforms are notorious for their aggressive and territorial nature. The Draconians possess a long lifespan of around 500 years, reaching physical maturity at 100 years. There are a wide variety of species, spanning from typical winged dragons to drakes, wyverns, and serpents.- DEVILS
The Devils are essentially Draconians corrupted by the influence of Chaos magic. Unlike the Draconians, the Devils lack species diversity and are predominately wyvern-like due to their origins. Since Chaos magic permanently changes the genetic makeup of lifeforms, their mutated genes are always carried over to the next generation.- MYRMIDONS
Anima first created this unique dragonic race to aid her in the chronicling of the world as well as finding a cure for wraithification. The Myrmidons are few, and all of them are based on the amphiptere species. Most Myrmidons are Time Aspects, the most powerful of which is dubbed the Time Keeper. For some reason, they exhibit physical attributes of both Draconians and Devils.- ANIMALS
Animals were the first intelligent, beast-like race to rise after the world was imbued with magic. Just like their beastly counterpart, this race is immensely diverse and includes taxonomic classes such as mammals, avians, reptiles, and so on. However, they lack a sense of community and struggle to find their place in a world dominated by dragonkin.- DEMONS
Demons, similar to the Devils, are corrupted Animals affected by Chaos radiation or Animals born into Chaos magic. They differ from that of Animals by having horns on their bodies, yellow sclera and Devil-like tails, along with a weakness to direct sunlight. The Demons were eventually integrated into Devil society, which seems to have no hierarchical structure.- BEASTS
The beasts were the first progenitors of life on Earth. There are two types of beastkin: sentient and non-sentient, the former of which range from majestic dragons to mere insects, while the latter consists of souls inhabiting natural objects (e.g. rocks, plants) that have been saturated by magic.- MONSTERS
While monsters are corrupted variants of beasts, the level of physical corruption surpasses that of both Devils and Demons. Dangerous, hostile and nearly untameable, these creatures have adapted to a nocturnal lifestyle, prowling the lands and waters at night.

REGIONS
Most if not all regions with an established government have some sort of monarchical system ruled by a king or queen. This page will focus on the Aetherian and Netherian kingdoms as well as their neighboring kingdoms. Both the Aetherian and Netherian kingdoms have transformed dramatically within the past 150 years. Their respective territories have shifted as the First War raged on, with the Aetherians struggling to claim the western region from Netherian control.- AETHER
Aether is a considerably vast region with multiple biomes, but it is generally dominated by lush forests, grasslands, and mountainous ridges, its biodiversity strikingly excessive in terms of both flora and fauna. Beasts roam the lands during the day while monsters and wraiths reign after nightfall. Animals have made their homes among the sub-regions that were not currently inhabited by Draconians, the latter of whom were dwelling in scattered villages, clan territories, or within the Aetherian Kingdom's capital: Anima City. Centered in the fortified city was the Ivorine Castle, a large concentric castle built near the waters of Seaside which serves as the seat of power for the Aetherian monarchs.- NETHER
Nether, the underground region that was dug below western Aether, has served as the home for both Devils and Demons. The fledgling kingdom constructed their first city of Bloodstone in the peak of the war, and it continues to stand as its capital city to this day; it is largely characterized by its Gothic architecture and cobblestone paths. Located in the center of the city is the Obsidian Citadel, which houses the Netherian royalty and various nobles. Shadowhaven's development below Bloodstone on the other hand was slowed to a crawl due to the war and the cold absence of light. The Netherians would leave the safety of the underground to hunt and scout during the night; their adaptations to darkness allowed them to develop various guerilla tactics and night vision.- OTHER REGIONS
Neighboring kingdoms include the Seasidean, Empyrean, and Oasian Kingdoms. Seaside encompasses the seas both east and west of Aether, its technologically-advanced kingdom having two capital cities as opposed to monarchical tradition. The region of Empyr is north of Aether, featuring mostly bird-like people and towers that stretch towards the sky. Lastly, the southern region of Oasis is known for its desert landscape and its Animalic and Demonic pantheon; its kingdom lies in the heart of a large-scale trading network.

- OVERVIEW
All 30 types of magic are categorized into one of five different spectra: Chaos, Decay, Nature, Primal and Spirit magic. Aspects are magic users who are typically born with one type of magic, although there are a few who possess multiple types of magic (*). Magical properties of Aspects vary, so no two Aspects would be the same even if they share the same type(s) of magic.Every Aspect leaves a "core" on their corpse some time after their death unless their soul is destroyed. A core consists of a sample of magic encased in a crystalline fragment of the Aspect's soul. Close proximity to a core that matches your magic type may imbue you with temporary power, while consuming a core will grant you long-lasting effects and damaging your soul in the process. Beware that the latter act is socially taboo in some regions. All life forms that corrupt into a wraith become a Void Aspect. The core a wraith leaves behind after being slain contains its entire soul as opposed to a fragment, such that the wraith can be "revived" after a period of time or after exposure to negative energies. It's imperative that Void cores are disposed of properly, either through purification with Hope or by destroying it, otherwise the wraith will return to life to wreak havoc once more. A Void core should be destroyed in an uninhabitable area as it stains the ground with an irremovable patch of Void.Aspects are identified by their aura: the boundary of the soul and the primary source of their magic.- SPECTRA
Chaos magic can only be used by Devils, Demons and monsters. If an Aspect wields any combination of 2-3 types of Chaos magic, they're considered an Unholy Aspect.Decay magic is more common among Devils, Demons and monsters, but any race can use this magic. If an Aspect wields any combination of one type of Chaos magic and one type of Decay magic, they're considered a Corruption Aspect, e.g. Shadow/Poison.Nature magic is more common among Draconians, Animals and beasts, while Light, Fire, and Life magic cannot be used by corrupt races. If an Aspect wields any combination of 2-3 types of Nature magic, they're considered an Elemental Aspect, e.g. Fire/Lightning/Earth. Corrupt races cannot be Elemental Aspects.Primal magic can be used by any race, but it is rare in contrast with the other spectra of magic. Only Myrmidons can be Time Aspects. If an Aspect wields any combination of Space magic and any other type of magic (as permitted by their race), they're considered a Force Aspect, e.g. Space/Chi.Spirit magic can also be used by any race. However, only celestials can be Hope Aspects while only wraiths can be Void Aspects. If an Aspect can use any combination of two magic types that are opposite to one another, they're considered a Balance Aspect, e.g. Light/Shadow.

THE SOUL (optional)
- OVERVIEW
The "soul" is a component of our very being that has been shrouded in mystery, or at least until the Soul Aspects began sharing their knowledge of the soul's foundations and its destiny. To put it succinctly, a soul is comprised of Hope and Void, and it is meant to undergo the cycle of reincarnation until it inevitably fades into nonexistence. It would be inaccurate to say that a celestial's soul is made entirely of Hope, or Void for its wraith counterpart, as a soul would simply die without either of those components. A soul is malleable and can shift from white to black like a gradient (though the inverse is very difficult to attain); the blank slate or a balanced soul is actually an evenly gray color. With this analogy, a celestial's soul would be very light gray while a wraith's soul is very dark gray.- REINCARNATION
When a lifeform deceases, its soul crosses over to the astral realm to find a suitable vessel for their next incarnation. With each death, a soul loses a bit of its essence until it is too weak to reincarnate, perishing in the end. This fragmentation process can be seen among lifeforms that harnessed magic during that life; the core of an Aspect is the physical residue of a soul. Besides the risk of genetic mutation from giving magic to lesser life forms, magic also further degrades the soul by leaving more residue behind.Souls typically do not recall memories from their past lives, but they are left as 'encrypted data' deep within the recesses of a soul. This data can be tapped into by Soul Aspects, but such an act is deemed extremely personal and is only performed with the entity's absolute consent.- AURA
Lastly, the "aura" serves as the shell of a soul. While a regular soul looks like a black and white orb, if a soul becomes disembodied through magical means and not through death, its aura will be seen instead. A disembodied soul preserves the physical appearance of its original vessel and may be tinted a color depending on their magic type.

THE PARAGON

Corvus
Mana Aspect
· Age: 100+ (biologically 20+)
· Gender: Female
· Race: Draconian
· Species: Fae Dragon
· Nationality: Aetherian
· Alignment: Lawful Neutral
BIOGRAPHY
The daughter of the tyrannical King Samael and the heir to the Aetherian throne, Princess Corvus lacks both empathy and a moral code, always obeying the word of the King down to the letter. She was tasked by her father to embark on a journey to recruit various champions in order to defeat the Netherian Kingdom and the wraith Animus. Although it was prophesied that she would bring hope to Aether, instead she strikes fear into the hearts of her subjects. She was groomed from birth into becoming a weapon that would hold no qualms in subjugating others at the king's whim. To preserve her so-called "purity," no one else, not even her personal knight, was allowed to get close to her. She underwent rigorous training at a young age and would be harshly disciplined over imperfect results until she could no longer understand fear.Despite her ruthless upbringing, her emotions and curiosity are merely repressed, not absent. Corvus has shown an occasional interest towards the language of flowers and she even enjoys flying as a shapeshifted raven.ABILITIES & TRAITS
Her weapon is a sword cane called the Raven's Spellblade, the blade of which consists of highly concentrated energy that cuts swiftly and thoroughly. Transformed into its spear mode, it can be launched like a javelin and detonate into explosive mana upon impact. Since the spear can move in a serpentine fashion, as well as being able to telepathically home onto her targets, it is extremely difficult to evade. As a Mana Aspect, Corvus draws her magic from her environment. Mana is a fundamental magic in that it can convert to other types of living magic, such as Life, Chi, Undeath, etc. She can shapeshift into many kinds of beasts, teleport to places she's been to, and heal others with Mana. Her magical barriers are next to impenetrable and can reflect magic back to her enemies.

THE GUARDIAN

Drakon
Lightning Aspect
· Age: 120+ (biologically 24+)
· Gender: Male
· Race: Draconian
· Species: Drake
· Nationality: Aetherian
· Alignment: Neutral Good
BIOGRAPHY
A proud warrior, metallurgist, and a member of the Ashen Drakes, which is a Draconic clan settled on the base of an inactive volcano. Equipped with a powerful mechanical arm and a soft heart, Drakon is known for his fondness for adorable beasts and his ferocity against their predators. He tends to be mocked by his clansmen for keeping a litter of rabbits as pets.He possesses self-sacrificial tendencies and often puts his life on the line in order to protect others, his prosthetic arm a visible proof of his bullheadedness. He also unintentionally treats smaller Draconians as if they're whelps in need of protection. Lastly, Drakon strongly opposes the oppression of the Animals by his fellow dragonkin.Drakon's physical strength does not translate well in terms of emotional fortitude. He may be intimidating, but unlike other Draconians he is a highly moral person and would often break out into tears over tender and sentimental moments.ABILITIES & TRAITS
Drakon's main weapon is Stormfall, a giant hammer comprised of electrical plates and a power core; the core can be replenished by conducting lightning into it. Its immense force can shatter boulders and trees with a single swing, but it can run out of power rather quickly. His secondary weapon is Stormfist, which is his mechanical arm; it requires high maintenance due to heat expansion. As a Lightning Aspect, Drakon can manipulate electricity and even call forth artificial lightning upon his foes. He can discharge high voltages of electricity and arc lightning from the tips of his fingers, in addition to being able to resuscitate his allies through a controlled shock (defibrillation). Inversely, he can incapacitate his enemies in the same manner.

THE MONK

Yang'zhu
Chi Aspect
· Age: 100+ (biologically 20+)
· Gender: Female
· Race: Draconian
· Species: Qilin
· Nationality: Aetherian
· Alignment: Lawful Good
BIOGRAPHY
A martial artist who trains at the Heavenly Monastery and Master Tianlong's most gifted student, Yang'zhu's tomboyish, lighthearted personality can be either uplifting or irritating to those around her. The goal of the monastery is to achieve a state of balance between Hope and Void, and Yang'zhu exemplifies this by maintaining both her emotional stability and her sense of righteousness.Yang'zhu is not very experienced in diplomatic matters and would often drop formalities in a conversation out of forgetfulness. Because she's in tune with her emotions, she is rather perceptive and can see through other people's deceptiveness. She is also a bit of a drunkard. She and her fellow monks dislike the ongoing conflict between the Draconians and Devils and prefer to not get involved, but her recruitment by Corvus will only further test their loyalty to their kingdom.ABILITIES & TRAITS
Yang'zhu's primary weapon is the Naginata of Four Seasons, an heirloom of her master and those who preceded him. The naginata itself does not have any innate abilities aside from finesse, so instead it is augmented with the power of the user's chi, improving the lethality of its strikes as well as permitting long-ranged chi attacks. She can disarm her enemies with relative ease.As a Chi Aspect, Yang'zhu can project the essence of her soul as magic and use it in her martial arts. She can transform her chi in the visage of the four "beast deities": the serpent, tiger, phoenix and turtle, and receive their blessings in the form of a stat increase. Chi can be used to heal herself and her allies. On the other hand, Yang'zhu can also induce paralysis via chi blocking. She can sense the presence of other souls, as well as intuit the amount of Hope and Void in them.

THE MISTRESS

Leviathan
Shadow Aspect
· Age: 105+ (biologically 21+)
· Gender: Female
· Race: Sea Devil
· Species: Hydra
· Nationality: Netherian
· Alignment: True Neutral
BIOGRAPHY
A high ranking soldier of the Netherian forces. Leviathan relishes in taunting her enemies (and allies) with coquetry; some even say she is akin to a succubus. Despite her teasing, she is unusually introverted and prefers to express herself with subtle smiles and glares. Blending into the shadows, she becomes a silent, judgmental observer.Leviathan is Seasidean-born, but she was orphaned after the First War had taken its toll on the seas of her former kingdom. The Netherians brought her and other refugees to their underground realm and provided them with basic needs. Since then, out of a sense of obligation, Leviathan now partakes in the war under the banner of Nether. She is rather close with the Prince of Nether and does not mock his authority, but she is not chained by his command either. Her utmost priority is her own survival, and if the world burns down she refuses to burn along with it.ABILITIES & TRAITS
Leviathan's primary weapon is Serpentis Nocte, a flintlock rifle that fires silent concussive bullets made of pure shadow; the gun emits a shadowy smoke that helps conceal the user while used for sniping. In close range encounters, she summons additional "shadow heads" from her back, a set of sentient serpents that are also made of shadow. By withstanding decapitation and absorbing offensive magic, these heads cannot be effectively destroyed. As a Shadow Aspect, Leviathan can hide in the shadows and is quite evasive as a result. She can damage her foes by attacking their physical shadows; this allows her to easily bypass their barriers and defenses. Her bullets can also explode into smoke upon impact, making it progressively difficult for her enemies to see or breathe.

THE PRINCE

Alastor
Unholy Aspect
· Age: 110+ (biologically 22+)
· Gender: Male
· Race: Devil
· Species: Wyvern
· Nationality: Netherian
· Alignment: Chaotic Good
BIOGRAPHY
The son of the benevolent Queen Abaddon and the heir to the Netherian throne, the charming Prince Alastor is characterized by his love for his kingdom and his recklessness in battle. He has good intentions, despite his borderline narcissistic demeanor. He believes that there is an inherent goodness in all children of Anima and Animus, and he vows that one day the First War will end in peace. He is adept at the art of manipulation and tends to dance around the truth whenever it may benefit him. Alastor enables his own recklessness by taking risks among political and martial matters, even if his chances of success are slim. He is also quite merciful and trusting of others, which are traits passed down by Lucifer, the first Devil and his ancestor.Alastor owns a pet named Cerberus, a three-headed hound and a paradigm of monster domestication.ABILITIES & TRAITS
Alastor's weapon, Brimstone's Edge, is a battle axe marked by three colored gems, each representing Blood, Shadow and Hellfire, that allow him to alternate between the different types of Chaos magic. The cutting edge can burn through flesh, corrode metal and armor, and desecrate the environment with each hellish strike. As an Unholy Aspect, Alastor possesses a variety of magical abilities in his arsenal. Blood magic allows him to regenerate his body with ease, but he can also utilize his own blood as a weapon by coagulating it into spikes. He can summon shadowy tendrils with Shadow magic, which will then bind or impale his foes. Lastly, he can set enemies and obstacles aflame with hellfire with the snap of his fingers. The combined power of his magics grants him the ability to create unholy abominations and maws of Hell.
